The Coupon Guy

Hmm ok so after about a month of emailing, we finally arrange to meet up for dinner. I was intrigued by this guy before we met. He seemed really cool, sophisticated, and charming. I was kinda excited and had really high hopes for this one.. I chose the restaurant Ama in soho to have dinner at 7:30 and we both agreed to show up. I arrived on time, and he was just a little bit late, which I didn’t mind. What ended up walking through the doors was quite unexpected. He didn’t look anything like his photo (Yes we met online) but then again, the photo was rather small, but I could tell he was handsome. Not that he wasn’t handsome in person, but he looked like an entirely different man. On the plus side he was: 6’4, nice bone structure, perfect teeth, nice skin, and slim build. On the not so positive side: receding hairline, and too long in the back, dressed badly (he was wearing front pleated slacks..Holy grossness, ill-fitted button down shirt, and god dare I say it, running sneakers! WTF!!! He definitely didn’t understand the term dress to impress because he certainly wasn’t trying to do that with me. Also he had just come from a networking event, and told me that he had already eaten. Great, so why were we having dinner? Whatever, he ended up ordering food anyway. The food was a little better than ok, but not amazing. We didn’t have any wine, which was fine. I wasn’t really in the mood and wasn’t trying to have an evening of lingering anyway. So we chatted for a couple of hours. He works for American Express and he was explaining some of the nuances of his job, which I completely zoned out on. This guy was sooo long winded and really loved to talk. It was great how engaging he was and he had a really nice smile, but come on…He talked a lot! He also spoke a bit about his family and how he was raised on a farm. Oh also I ordered a bottle of sparkling water but he didn’t drink any of it. He preferred the tap. Whatever. We also didn’t have any appetizers and I ate dessert alone. He didn’t like chocolate. I was beginning to wonder what was wrong with this dude. One a nice side, he was very polite, and listened to me when I spoke. He was very much a gentleman and seemed interested in me. He also told me that when he lived in LA, he was a model…He never booked anything (probably due to his 6’4 stature) but that was something interesting about him. He kinda understood more than I realized about the fashion industry. So I excused myself toward the end of the dinner to use the ladies room, and when I came back, the check was at the table. Not only that, the waiter was there too explaining to him that the coupon (yes coupon) that he brought wasn’t valid and he couldn’t use it because it was only good from 5-7 pm and we arrived at 7:30. I could see he was annoyed, which is man code for embarrassed. Why he was trying to pay for dinner with a coupon on a first date was weird, but I know he tried to make that transaction while I was in the bathroom in hopes that I wouldn’t know and see how cheap he was. After the whole check fiasco, he apologized to me and hoped that I wasn’t embarrassed. Why would I be embarrassed? I wasn’t the one trying to get a discount with a coupon on a first date. I blew it off and enjoyed my chocolate dessert by myself. He watched as I ate it and could tell he enjoyed watching me eat it. Why do men like that? Lol. So after dessert, he stayed a few minutes longer and then finally decided to leave. He walked me to the corner and helped me get into a cab. Almost an hour later I got a call from him, which I didn’t pick up because I was on the phone with the beautiful Asian. He left a message just wanting to make sure I got home safely. That was sweet. Overall, it was a decent night. Not sure if he is THE ONE, but I might go out with him again.

Girl coupons are nothing! At least he didn't pull the slip and fall to get the meal free. LOVES IT!
